As the name suggests, Toy Poodle is the smallest of the three types of Poodle dogs. Like other Poodles, Toy Poodle dogs are also characterized by a high degree of intelligence. The breed is also known by other names like French Poodle, Barbone, Pudle, Caniche etc.
The exact origin of the breed is not known for sure but these dogs are believed to have originated in Germany. The delightful and adorable Toy Poodle dogs were quite popular among royal people in earlier times because of their small size and cheerful temperament. These smart water retriever dogs are highly trainable and tend to learn and perform tricks almost effortlessly.
This cute dog breed is characterized by a proportionate, square body. The face tends to bear an alert and intelligent expression. The moderately rounded skull is followed by a long and straight muzzle.
The black or brown colored eyes that are set wide apart are somewhat oval in shape. The flat and long ears hang close to the head. They tend to have to small and oval shaped feet accompanied by arched toes.
Color: Toy Poodle dogs are mostly available in a number of solid colors, for instance black, white, cream, silver, apricot, red, blue, brown etc.
Height: Both male as well as female Toy Poodles grow up to 10 inches in height.
Weight: The ideal weight for Toy Poodle dog breed ranges between 6 to 9 pounds.
Though long lived, still Toy Poodles are prone to a number of health issues like Hip Dysplasia, Dislocated Kneecaps and other problems associated with the intervertebral disc.
Other common health problems in these dogs are IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia), Hypothyroidism, Bloating, Diabetes, Heart Diseases, Epilepsy, Juvenile Renal Disease, Tracheal Collapse, Ear Infections and other skin related problems. Some are also prone to eye problems like Blindness and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
Life Expectancy: The average lifespan of these dogs is 12 to 15 years. Some may even live up to 20 years.
Litter Size: The average litter size of Toy Poodles is 3 puppies, but it is variable because a lot depends on the age and physical preparation of the female.
The curly or corded hair coat of a Toy Poodle needs daily brushing and combing. It can be wavy and soft to wooly and coarse in texture. The hair coat usually requires professional clipping every six to eight weeks.
Out the different types of Poodle clips, the Puppy Clip, English Saddle Clip and Continental Clip are the most popular, especially in case of Toy Poodle dogs being used for show purposes. Pet owners may also opt for Pet Clips or Lamb Clips. This hypoallergenic breed sheds minimally.
These dogs should be bathed regularly. Their hanging ears should also be cleaned from time to time to remove ear wax and check for mites. Other grooming activities like eye cleaning, teeth brushing, nail trimming etc should be carried out on a more or less regular basis.
Toy Poodle breed dogs are pleasant, lively, faithful, sensitive, intelligent, friendly, affectionate, protective and highly responsive in temperament.
They are usually loving and playful with kids who in turn love to treat these dogs as their best buddies. Toy Poodle dogs also cordial with other pets in the house. They like to utilize their higher level of intelligence in finding ways to please their beloved owners.
Owners, in their turn should make efforts to avoid leaving these cheerful dogs alone as loneliness gives rise to separation anxiety in these dogs that tend to have a certain amount of nervous energy. These smart and alert dogs make for excellent watchdogs but may be prone to excessive barking.
These clever dogs tend to adapt well in urban as well as rural settings without any trouble. Toy Poodle dogs are active and energetic dogs that require a great deal of physical exercise. Apart from the short daily walks, they find swimming and playing fetch and chase games quite appealing.
When provided with sufficient physical activity, they tend to be relaxed and inactive indoors. They tend to do well even in apartments without yards.
