Pugapoo, also referred to as Pugoodle, is a hybrid breed developed by the combination of Poodle and Pug breeds. Some of these dogs are true crosses while some are multigenerational, that is, resulting from successive generations.
This breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) because it is not a pure breed. Nonetheless, the hybrid breed is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC) and International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR).
As Pugapoo is a hybrid breed, there are no specific standards for the dog’s physical characteristics. Still, the body is mostly well muscled. The front limbs are generally straight and the rear limbs are likely to be slightly angular. The dog usually has dark brown eyes. The nose tends to be prominent and black in color. The hair coat can either be curly, like that of a Poodle or short and straight like that of a Pug.
Color: These dogs are generally available in colors like black, white, grey, cream, fawn, or orange.
Height: The average height of Pugapoo breed dogs ranges between 6 to 14 inches.
Weight: Both male as well female Pugapoos usually weigh about 8 to 18 pounds.
Hybrid breeds are generally considered less susceptible to genetic health issues. Still, chances of developing liver shunts, hypoglycemia, luxating patella and other such health problems can not be ruled out completely.
Life Expectancy: The average life span of Pugapoo dogs is generally 10 to 12 years.
Litter Size: On an average, Pugapoo litter is about 3 to 8 puppies.
Grooming a Pugapoo requires regular brushing and combing of the medium to long hair coat to maintain it in perfect condition. In case the hair coat curly and non-shedding then it would need occasional professional trimming as well.
Moreover, like Pugs, Pug-A-Poo dogs may also have skin folds that need to be cleaned from time to time. Other grooming activities include nail trimming, checking and cleaning the eyes and ears, brushing the teeth etc. These dogs need not be bathed too frequently.
Pugapoo temperament is often a combination of traits from Pug and Poodle dog breeds. These adorable dogs are affectionate, friendly, lively and intelligent. However, they have been known to be stubborn and willful as well. In addition, they are slow to respond to training, therefore, training these dogs requires patience and consistency.
These hybrid breed dogs do not bark as often as other small breeds but are sure to announce the arrival of visitors. Pugapoo dogs are usually good with kids and get along well with other pets. These playful dogs dedicate their lives to their owners and enjoy doing things that please their beloved owners. They thrive on human companionship and derive pleasure in keeping you amused with their mischievous activities.
These lovely and highly energetic dogs tend to be active indoors. They are better kept as indoor dogs and do not require plenty of additional exercise. Thus, these smart dogs make wonderful companion dogs for families as well as senior citizens. Pugapoo dogs are considered suitable for apartment situation and do well with experienced as well as first time dog owners willing to take on responsibilities of dog ownership.
