English Shepherd dogs are active and intelligent dogs that were primarily used as farm dogs. In fact, these herding dogs are good at herding and protecting a variety of livestock animals such as sheep, cattle, pigs, goats, poultry etc. They are skilled at vermin hunting too.
These dogs were brought to the British Isles by Julius Caesar in the year 55 BC when he invaded the area. Apart from being excellent working dogs, the all-purpose English Shepherd breed dogs also make for excellent companion dogs.
In addition, nowadays, these dogs are doing well in competitive events like agility, flyball and Frisbee. This dog breed was originally developed by using other farm dogs like Scotch Collies and Border Collies.
The agile English Shepherd dogs are medium in size and characterized by a well balanced and athletic build. The body is somewhat longer than it is tall. The skull is usually wide with a slight dome. The muzzle is moderately broad and has a slightly defined stop.
The short and wide, low set ears are set close to the head. The eyes are dark brown and the nose is black in color. To some extent, these dogs are quite similar to Border Collies and Australian Shepherds in appearance.
Color: Common English Shepherd colors are black, black and tan, white and tan, sable and white, black and white, brindle and tricolors.
Height: The average height of English Shepherd dog breed ranges between 18 to 24 inches.
Weight: These dogs are generally 45 to 60 pounds in weight. Similarly, female English Shepherds are also about 40 to 50 pounds in weight.
Apart from the common dog diseases, English Shepherd dogs are particularly prone to problems like Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia. On the whole, however, these dogs are relatively healthy.
Life Expectancy: The average English Shepherd lifespan is generally 12 to 16 years.

English Shepherd grooming primarily consists of regular brushing and combing the medium length hair coat of the dog. The hair coat can be straight, wavy or curly. The outer coat is moderately coarse in texture whereas the under coat is soft, dense and fine.
These dogs are relatively clean and need to be bathed only when necessary. Grooming an English Shepherd also calls for activities like regularly trimming the toenails, cleaning the eyes and ears brushing the teeth and other essential activities
English Shepherd temperament is highly intelligent, energetic, friendly, alert, independent, courageous, loyal, sensitive, calm, kind, protective and affectionate. These smart and responsive dogs are easily trainable as they tend to learn routines in no time.
When properly introduced and socialized early in life, they get along well with other pets in the house. They are generally calm and friendly with kids. However, they can be wary of strangers. These alert and attentive dogs are good at performing watchdog duties. English Shepherd breed dogs are people oriented dogs that tend to suffer from separation anxiety when bereft of the company of their owners for longer durations.
English Shepherd dogs are generally not recommended for inexperienced first time dog owners. These dogs require moderate exercise to provide adequate physical and mental stimulation on a regular basis otherwise they tend to exhibit destructive behaviors.
Therefore, these dogs need to be taken for long daily walks and preferably jogs as well. English Shepherd dogs are usually considered good for rural and suburban settings but they tend to adapt well in apartment situation as well.
