Boykin Spaniel dogs are medium sized working dogs. These intelligent dogs tend to have a keen sense of smell and hence are regarded as excellent bird hunters. The breed originated in South Carolina, USA. Springer Spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, American Water Spaniel and Pointer dog breeds have played an important role in the development of Boykin Spaniel dog breed. Apart from upland bird hunting, these dogs are also good at hunting waterfowls.
Boykin Spaniel dog breed is characterized by a typical spaniel type head. However, these dogs are larger than Cocker Spaniels. They are well built and tend to possess great speed and stamina even in hot weather. The medium sized, oval shaped eyes are generally brown in color. The high set, pendulous ears tend to hang close to the cheeks.
Color: Common Boykin Spaniel colors are liver, brown and dark chocolate.
Height: The average height of these dogs is about 15.5 to 18 inches. Female Boykin Spaniels are a bit shorter, that is, 14 to 16.5 inches.
Weight: The ideal weight of these dogs ranges between 30 to 40 pounds. The bitches are usually 25 to 35 pounds in weight.
Boykin Spaniel dogs have been known to be vulnerable to health issues like Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Patella Luxation etc. They are also prone to heart problems, eye issues, skin problems and other common dog diseases. Their ears need special care as they tend to develop ear infections when the ears are not dried properly.
Life Expectancy: The average life span of these dogs is generally 12 to 14 years.
Litter Size: The average Boykin Spaniel litter size is usually about 5 to 7 puppies.
Ideal Boykin Spaniel grooming requires daily brushing of the moderately wavy water proof double coat. It is short to medium in length. If daily brushing is not feasible then it should be brushed every few days in order to avoid matting. The hair coat can be trimmed to give a better well groomed appearance.
They need to be bathed occasionally, only when necessary. Their ears should be kept dry and clean and checked regularly to avoid ear infections. Nail trimming, eye cleaning, teeth brushing and other grooming activities also need to be conducted from time to time.
